2005 Midwest Haunter's Convention Overview

2005 Midwest Haunters Convention - Columbus OhioOn the weekend of July 22nd, 2005, hundreds of haunt owners, actors and haunted house enthusiasts traveled to Columbus, Ohio to attend the 2005 Midwest Haunters Convention.  Throughout the weekend there were plenty of Haunted House-related activities to keep everyone busy, including a wide variety of Haunter seminars. These seminars covered numerous Haunt-related topics, such as airbrushing, working with animatronics, lifecasting, using prosthetics, character development for Haunted House actors, public relations tips and working with the media. In between seminars, attendees could walk the aisles and peruse the wares displayed at the booths from 40 different companies. There was a wide variety of products and services available at the vendor booths, including animated & static props, electronic controls for sound / lighting / props, artificial scents, website & graphic design services, make-up, online ticketing services for Haunted Attractions, custom embroidery, theatrical contacts, masks, costumes and more.

This year the vendor booths, Monster Make-up Wars, auction and various other activities were all hosted inside the Radisson Hotel, which really minimized travel.  It was very convenient to have most of the activities in the same hotel, where most of the attendees were staying.  As for those after-hour events that were hosted outside of the hotel (Scareparts tour, trip to Costume Specialists, House of Nightmares Haunted House tour, etc), tour busses were provided for those people who didn't want to drive there themselves.

One of the biggest highlights of the weekend for me was the trip to the House of Nightmares Haunted House.  The majority of Haunted Attractions that I have had the opportunity to visit have been located inside strip malls, farmer's barns or old store buildings.  Naturally, I was surprised when I arrived at this Haunted House to find that it was inside a huge four story, 130 year-old brick building.   The building was covered with vines and surrounded by tall trees. What a creepy-looking place! They had the haunt fully operational and open to convention attendees for tours. The aged and deteriorated interior of the old building really added to the spooky atmosphere of the attraction. Overall, it was a great Haunted House.

In the rest of this overview, I have included four separate photo gallery pages that contain pictures taken at vendor booths, a few of the seminars, the Monster Make-up Wars, the Scareparts tour, the trip to Costume Specialists, the Masquerade Party and more!  Overall, more than 130 pictures are posted online for your enjoyment!  Click on the hyperlinks along the top of the page to visit the different picture galleries.

Kudos to Barry Schieferstein, Kathy Schieferstein, Kelly Collins and Neena Robinson for organizing and hosting this great gathering! I look forward to seeing what the Midwest Haunter's Convention has to offer in 2006.  Anyway,  I hope you enjoy the picture galleries.

Happy Haunting,
