On April 29th, 2006 the Trail of Screams (a Haunted Attraction in Rockford, Illinois) hosted “The Scare Zone 2”, their second annual Haunter seminars. These free seminars were open to anyone in the Haunted Attraction Industry interested in learning new tricks of the trade and sharpening their Haunt-related skills. Upon arrival guests were ushered into the “Morgue”, where they could check in, fill out a “D.O.A.” name tag and pick up hand-outs providing a detailed schedule of activities for the afternoon. The seminars covered a wide variety of Haunt-related topics like “what makes a Haunted House rock?”, scare tactics,
make-up techniques, how to create a frightening character and more. During the afternoon, snacks & pop were provided for lunch, and pizza was available for $1 per slice.
During the Gorification Seminar, various make-up techniques were tested out on volunteers from the audience. In addition to being shown how to simulate a black eye and severe skin abrasions with make-up, audience members were shown the proper way to apply a prosthetic appliance. Wrapping up this session, some simple airbrushing techniques were explained, along with a demonstration illustrating the use of
blacklight reactive make-up.
In addition to the instructor-led make-up demonstrations, there was also a hands-on Gorification workshop. Seminar attendees were encouraged to come up and try their hand at using some make-up techniques on
volunteers from the audience. The Trail of Screams generously donated all of the make-up supplies that were used in this hands-on workshop.
To conclude the day’s events, the Trail of Screams held a monster make-up competition that they called “Monster Idol”. Seminar attendees were split up into three different teams. Each team was given a group of items to work with (make-up and other materials). Within a 60 minute time limit, contestants had to use those items to transform one of the members of their team into a gruesome creature. Set up similar to American Idol, a panel of three judges gave feedback to the teams on what they felt was done well, as well as what they thought could have been done better. The judges voted by secret ballot, giving each team’s make-up job scores in the following categories: originality, gore and overall scare factor. While all the teams did a great job, only one could be chosen as the winner.
Special thanks to the Trail of
Screams Staff for organizing this great event. It was well
organized and very informative. It was also a great networking
opportunity for Haunters from other attractions. Kudos to Ann,
Brian, Nick, Mike and the rest of the Trail of Screams group who helped
put this event together.
