2010 Transworld: Columbia Haunt Tour
The Necropolis & Fearfest Haunted Attractions

On Friday I went on the Columbia Haunt Tour. This was a bus tour of two haunted attractions located in Columbia, Missouri: Fearfest and The Necropolis. The price of admission not only included tours of both haunts with bus transportation to and from the events, but also a meal from Subway, as well. While travel time was a bit on the long side (2 hours each way), I definitely wasn’t disappointed after seeing both attractions. Special thanks to Bill Schnell, Greg Allen and everyone else involved in organizing this haunt tour.

Fearfest Haunted House

Fearfest was located in an old building with peeling paint. The locale was a great backdrop for a haunted attraction. Throughout the haunted house, there were several scenes, including a funeral, morgue, cave, disgusting kitchen, bathroom and others. The second half of the attraction had an insane asylum theme, with dingy white walls and flickering light fixtures. Throughout the insane asylum, there were various patients milling about, along with some great “Silent Hill” nurses. With their distressed costumes and herky-jerky movements, they were very similar to the nurses that were in the movie. Most of the actors had very theatrical, interactive style and a number of them had speaking parts.

The Necropolis Haunted House

Necropolis had a very old-school feel. Before entering, patrons were instructed that the actors could touch them, but they couldn’t touch the actors. With that being said... it was no surprise that throughout the haunt, the actors had a very “hands-on” approach. A number of them grabbed your ankles or brushed by patrons. Scenes included a realistic hillbilly house, dingy bathroom, mad scientist’s laboratory, cockroach hallway, circus midway and more. The area that visually stood out the most had a real waterfall and a "body of water", which was a visual effect created by green laser light shining through fog.  At the end of the attraction there was a very devious set up, combining a harsh vibration grate and a claustrophobia effect that limited patrons' forward movement.
