Visibility/Location: Midway of Madness is easy to find - *if* you know it's at the Champaign County Fairgrounds. Once you know that, you're fine. Once you enter the fairgrounds (with signage), there are actors seated holding signs or pointing people towards parking. This is a nice touch - it's always hard to figure out where to park with outdoor type haunts like this, so this made things super easy.
Wait Entertainment: The wait wasn't that long, and they had a couple of actors working the line. Two particularly effective actors are these two young girls dressed up in creepy evil doll-like masks. A friend I was with was particularly terrified of them, and they went at her just enough to keep her having fun while also being scared to death. This served to entertain the entire line of people - nice touch, and shows they know what they're doing.
Length of Event: About 20 minutes once we got inside.
Actor Performance: The actors in this haunt are great. They know their areas very well and play it to the hilt. The first actor you meet runs you through the rules, which is a great touch. It gets you in the mood while having fun. Once particularly great actor hides in a room where the lights just go off - that dude is completely silent as he places himself for the scare.
These actors really know how to work the haunt.
Patron Flow Inside Attraction: We never ran into another group, and the haunt was pretty busy. We were ushered along effectively from room to room, even when we sometimes took too long or too short (due to the aforementioned friend I was with, who has a tendency to either sprint or crawl at different times, depending on her terror level).
Appropriate Ages: I would say teens and up. Not a lot of gore, but it's pretty intense.
Props / Special FX: While the sets aren't that detailed (it's not in a permanent spot, so they don't build it out fantastically), the props and FX they have they put to good use, mostly. They have some really expensive looking props that draw the eye - often to distract you from an actor that's about to pounce, which is great. There's good use of rumbling walls, floors, and air cannons. Those always get me, admittedly. And they use lighting effectively - shutting it on and off to increase your terror.
Costumes / Make-up: I mostly noticed masks in this haunt, not a lot of make up. Given the nature of the haunt (Midway theme, at least partially), I'd hoped for more spooky clowns or something. But it didn't detract from the actors' performances. Would have been nice to see some faces from time to time, though.
Summary: All in all, Midway of Madness is WELL WORTH your time and the price of admission. It looks like it's a fly by night thing if you only pay attention to the sets. But the maze is one of the best I've been through (just the right amount of confusion, claustrophobia, etc., and it's pitch black), and the actors really know their stuff.
This was my third year going through. They changed it up again a lot this year; I think I may have liked some aspects of last year's setup and theming a bit more, but I think the actors have stepped it up significantly over last year, and I think the opening maze is unique and fun.
