Post The Legend of the Northwestern Ill. Roads Reply with quote
I have heard this from a great many Ravens Grin tourists:"We were driving for a couple of hours to get here when we noticed the highway had gotten very dark (not many lights alongside the road out here)we got scared. (Because it was darker) Then small, hairy creatures were running along the road, some even darted out infront of the car, we almost hit one, we don't know what it was!"
Well it was either a dog, cat, raccoon, possuum, deer, coyote, fox, skunk, ground hog, beaver, muskrat, bear or space alien.
(Bear tracks have been recently found and verified whereas pregnantcys via space aliens have not been varified, so think again girls!)
There are ALOT of deer in northwestern Illinois!
Deer are very unpredictable! They might run across the road infront of you, then as you get closer, decide to run back infront of you again!
Those small plastic stick-on deer whistles might work? We use them, hoping that they do.Not an expensive "gamble" for maybe $3.00.
All of the possible live road hazards mentioned is a good reason to only drive the posted speed limit at night even if the road seems very lonely, because it really is not that way with all the critters wandering out there. Certain nights are either feeding or breeding nights for certain animals, the next sunlight shows the results of that when counting all the bodies along the road.
Roadkill can be very expensive to fix for some smaller, lower cars. Last week a woman showed me her raccoon damaged little Ford, the car is still very drivable, just a plastic pan below her bumper is broke(or at least it looks like that is all that is wrong) $3,500! YES!??
One more mention on this subjest:It gets worse during deer season! Most of the corn is picked, gone, the deer have less to eat and hiding places and people begin shooting at them! No wonder?
We would be crazed and running too, wouldn't we?
