2003 Downs Haunted House Review

Downs Haunted House
Dooley Park
Downs, IL 61736
Date of Review: 10/25/03
Visibility/Location: This event can be kind of difficult to find if you aren't familiar with the downtown area of Downs. There weren't any signs along the main road, leading you to the event.
Outside Appearance: This haunted house was held in a community park building.  While the outside of the building  was pretty plain-looking, they did have an nice brick facade, with chains hanging down, at the entrance of the haunted house.
Wait Entertainment: The main wait entertainment was music they had playing outside, for the people waiting in line.
Admission Price: ONLY $1.00
Length:

Haunted House: 7 Minutes *

* = Since people move through haunted attractions at different rates, your time may vary.

Scare Factor: Low
Atmosphere: The atmosphere in this attraction was created by a lot of the spooky dark hallways and a few nice special effects.
Crowd Control: Groups in the haunted house were spaced out appropriately.   I didn't run into any other groups on my trip through the Downs Haunted House.
Other Customer's
Opinions:
Everyone that I spoke with liked the affordable price of this event. In the Haunted House, everyone's favorite seemed to be the spinning black hole vortex.

Summary:

This attraction is truly the best value of any event that I have ever attended.  Admission of only $1.00 includes all of the following:

  • Village of Downs Haunted House
  • Hayrack Ride through a haunted graveyard
  • All the hot dogs you can eat! (No limit but you have to cook them yourself over an open fire!)

This haunted house utilized some very dark hallways, along with some simple effective scenes.   I enjoyed some of the special effects like the fire engine with working lights and siren, and the spinning vortex.  Also in the jungle scene, there was a good sneak attack.  There were some nice surprises, but nothing overly intense, which makes it a perfect event for the entire family.

I have seen some comparable haunted houses that charge much more, so this is really a great deal.  Where else can you go to entertain your entire family for only $1 per person?  It is also nice to know that the proceeds are donated to various community projects.
