Frightmare 2003 "Pirates' Revenge" Review

Frightmare 2003 "Pirates' Revenge "
7759 South Harlem
Burbank, IL 60459
Date of Review: 10/18/03
Visibility/Location: Frightmare 2003 is located in the Haunted Trails Amusement Park along South Harlem.  Their large illuminated sign along the side of the road, as well as the large facade make this event easy to find.  This attraction is in a great location, with plenty of parking available behind the haunted house.
Outside Appearance: There was a great facade of a pirate ship's hull, built outside the ticket window of this attraction, complete with masts and a pirate flag flying in the wind.  While the new facade didn't quite match the original blue castle/dungeon  theme painted on the backdrop, the monster on the original backdrop facade (behind the pirate ship) was changed into a pirate character, via a very creative paint job.
Wait Entertainment: The only wait entertainment provided was the eerie music soundtrack playing outside the attraction.
Admission Price: General Admission: $8.00
Length:

6.5  Minutes *

* = Since people move through haunted attractions at different rates, your time may vary.

Scare Factor: Low-Medium
Atmosphere: Initially the mood was established by the eerie music playing outside and the pirate ship facade.  Inside the attraction, the mood was further enhanced by the continuation of the pirate ship theme throughout the rest of the house.
Crowd Control: Crowd control was excellent.  I never ran into another group.  The introduction and list of rules, provided by a "Pirate" in the opening scene, was sufficient to properly space out the groups.
Other Customer's
Opinions:
Many of the customers I spoke with were satisfied with their trip through Pirates' Revenge.  Some commented that their children really enjoyed the haunted house.

Summary:

While many haunted houses never really establish a consistent theme, this attraction really follows through, with pirate-related scenes, props, pirate characters painted on the walls and related music soundtracks throughout the entire attraction. All of the actors, even the ticket taker, were dressed in pirate costumes.

Pirates' Revenge had a couple of nice animatronic props, as well as skeletons and other generic pieces, that were creatively adapted to fit in within pirate theme.  The only prop that didn't directly conform to the pirate theme was the spinning vortex.

While one of the actors was very energetic, most of the others seemed to be very low-key and unobtrusive. Walking through this house seemed to be more fun than scary, which made it an appropriate attraction for young children.  Because it is not overly terrifying, Frightmare 2003 "Pirates' Revenge" is a nice family-friendly event.
