HauntedIllinois.com's
2003 Dungeon of Darkness Review

Dungeon of Darkness
Westmont Jaycees
1100 Ogden Avenue
Downers Grove, IL 60515
Date of Review: 10/29/03
Visibility/Location: Visibility of this attraction was excellent.  Along the side of the road, there was an illuminated sign that said "Haunted House This Way", with an arrow pointing toward the attraction.  There was also a backlit sign (converted from a Burpee Nursery sign) that told you the haunted house was open.  The haunted house also had a huge vinyl banner across the front of the building, above the entrance.
Outside Appearance: This attraction was held inside an old Burpee Nursery building with black plastic covering the windows, which was a little plain-looking. There weren't a lot of outside decorations; however, they did stage a simulated auto accident outside, warning customers of the dangers of drinking and driving.
Wait Entertainment: The main wait entertainment was provided by movies playing on a large projection screen in the waiting room.  Unfortunately the angle of the screen made it difficult at times, depending on where you were standing in line, to see the picture clearly.
Admission Price: $6.00
Length:

6.5 Minutes *

Scare Factor: Medium
Atmosphere: A nice spooky atmosphere was created by scenes of various themes and long stretches of eerie, dark hallways. Most of the areas of the house had custom sound effects and music soundtracks to enhance the overall "feel" and believability of the illusion they were trying to create.
Crowd Control: Crowd control was excellent.  The ride in the freight elevator at the beginning of the house provided ample spacing of patrons; I didn't run into any other groups.
Other Customer's
Opinions:
Most patrons really seemed to enjoy themselves.  Several customers commented that they really liked the ride in the freight elevator.

Summary:

This attraction really started off in a unique way, as groups were slowly lowered into the depths of the building in a freight elevator.  In the beginning, a good portion of the attraction consisted of dark twisting hallways (some you could see where you were going, while others were pitch black).  Once you were about halfway through the house, though, the scenes were placed closer together, so the action seemed to build toward the end.

Throughout the attraction there were scenes of various themes.  With everything from their depiction of Hell with devilish creatures, to the strobe room filled with fog, the Westmont Jaycees created a great spooky atmosphere.

All of the actors were very much into their roles and quite intimidating at times.  Most of them stalked the customers as they walked by, while others jumped out to startle everyone in the group.  In the toxic waste scene, actors could be seen hiding behind barrels, before they were able to attack, but overall all the actors performed well and most of the surprise attacks were well timed and effective.  In some scenes, like the bloody bathroom, actors seemed to come out of nowhere.

The Westmont Jaycees really put on a great show this year.  It was well worth the affordable $6.00 admission price.
