Summary:
How much would you pay
for a haunted house, hayrack ride and ALL THE HOT DOGS YOU CAN
EAT??? $5.00... $10.00??? How about just $1? That's
right, admission to this attraction, including all the
aforementioned activities, was only one dollar! What a
value!
For a low-budget haunted
house, they really do a great job. Over the past few
years, they have really come up with some interesting
ideas. The tour started as they told you the rules of the
house, inside their specially constructed staging area that
itself resembled a haunted house (see
picture above). Upon entering the attraction, you were
immediately taken aback by a fire engine, with its lights on,
rolling right at you. They even had some props that you
normally see at some high-end attractions. In one of the dark hallways, I saw a
great "flying crank ghost". The various scenes
inside the house included a prison escape, a possessed girl
whose bed floated off the ground and a psychic seance. Overall,
the seance was my favorite. In this scene the gypsy woman
in the room had everyone sit down and place their hands on the
table. After everyone followed her instructions, she
attempted to reach spirits from "the other side". As she
chanted a spirit incantation from her book of spells, the floor
and table started to vibrate and shake violently. That was
a great effect! Toward the end, they had a spinning vortex tunnel, which
was also a crowd favorite.
I have always been impressed
with this attraction. It is a great community activity. Throughout its 13 years of operation, the Downs
event has been completely funded by community donations.
Many people in the community have donated their time and effort to
make this event come together. Even the mayor got involved. He volunteered to be a costumed
character, taking tickets at the entrance of the haunted house.
For the
admission price, this is the best bang for your buck that I have
ever seen. Kudos to the Downs group for putting together
this great event!
