Amenti Haunted House
Egyptian Theatre
135 N. 2nd Street
Dekalb, IL 60115

Visited: 10/18/14

Reviewed By: Raven
Visibility/Location: Amenti is located in the old historical Egyptian Theater in downtown Dekalb.

Well lit, and easy to find – if using GPS, will not have a problem locating.

Street parking is easily found around the theater. Otherwise if this is full, there is a free parking lot a block or two down from the theater.
Wait Entertainment: Loud Egyptian style music played while flat screens repeated trivia and advertisements – giving something to look at.
The famous Amenti Zombie terrorized the line – growling jokes – exchanging his chainsaw for a smaller Tonka toy style – and using the full sized to bang on the floor and chase unsuspecting victims as they waited or exited.

This paired with the sarcophagus and the ticket booth in the main hallway made for a not too boring wait.
Admission Price: $13.00
Parking: Free

Note: The time shown here represents the actual time spent moving forward through the attraction. Time spent waiting in queue lines, staging areas, intro scenes, rules rooms and when traffic jams cause patrons to come to a halt, has been subtracted.

LPR: 2.692
LPR stands for Length/Price Ratio. It represents perceived value of an event, by comparing length vs price of admission. Higher numbers represent more value per dollar. Actual quality and/or entertainment value of an event are not factors in this calculation. Click Here to see how this event compares to others visited this year by the staff of HauntedIllinois.com.
Scare Factor: Medium-High
Crowd Control: They did well in this category – keeping the groups small while spacing them out enough to keep the line outside moving well.

And although we took a little longer then some may have to work their way around, we did not run into the group before or after us while in the event.

Summary:

Held inside the Historic – and Haunted – Egyptian Theater, Amenti is well worth checking out.

Relying heavily on very intense and fun actors and a few fun scenes, Amenti will make your journey into the afterworld a memorial one.

Consisting of many dark halls and stairways, you wind your way through the different levels of the theater itself.

Your journey begins with Ra, as it should in the afterlife. Two frightening mummies point – and follow in a silent scream behind you as you work your way into the deity’s room. Once there, a very large Ra gets in your face, while one of the mummies finds his baby in a tomb and hugs it tightly. Going up the stairs, these mummies will follow you, beckoning you back to join them in the afterlife.

The mummies in this scene set standard for the way the actors worked their way through – and out – of the various rooms. Some following you, others climbing gates and walls, some up high in an attic, while others hid neatly in little corners. One in particular – in the asylum – not only followed behind and climbed out of his cell – but crawled on the floor weaving through our little group – making the experience very creepy.
There were some areas where I had to look behind me to make sure we still didn’t have a creature following along.

This haunt relies heavily on traditional scares from their actors – and the actors excel at their work.

Consisting of many dark hallways, there are some fun scenes here as well.

The stark white asylum with winding walkways and rage inflicted maniacs who attempted to escape.

The Dentist’s office – complete with chair and an assistant who promised a very nice smile after he was done.

We enjoyed the birthday party – many balloons filled a room with huge toy blocks stood on each side of the room.

Lester’s ice cream and the clown room was another. Lester said everyone liked his ice cream – and we wanted to believe him – until he ratted us out to the clowns.

The clown room itself was filled with fun brightly colored cloth hanging from the ceiling as you walked through – filling the rooms. Flashing lights made it a little difficult to see your way around – and the evil clown who hid silently in one of the walkways.

In one of the scenes, a patient begged for help while a maniac doctor lurked nearby. Instead of simply of making an appearance from behind a wall, the doctor violently hacked her up before running after – and following us up to the stairway after.

There are a few areas where it is a complete black out – so much so I lost my way there for a little while – and had to hold my son’s hand to make it through. Was a little disorientating.

If you’re looking for a very fun and actor based haunt, Amenti is a winner. There’s some great intensity with the actors here – making it a very fun ride.

Although we came a little later, this would be great to pair up with the corn maze at Jonamac farm – and there is a special deal for this option – allowing you to continue the fun after your escape – should you dare.
