McHenry Area Jaycees Haunted House
300 Knox Park
McHenry, IL 60050

Visited: 10/22/15

Reviewed By: The Gatecreeper
Visibility/Location: Off of the Rt. 31 and Knox intersection there is a light up marquee with an arrow pointing into the park. When reaching the T-intersection parking is to the left, the haunt is to the right. The gate is closed that leads right, you will have to go around the gate and then go up a dark drive uphill. You can see the ticket booth and barn once you turn the corner. At first we were not sure if the haunt was open with the uninviting closed gate and no lighting up the path. There were a few cars in the lot but after we saw people coming down we headed up.
Wait Entertainment: I wouldn't say there was no wait entertainment. There was a clown that kinda just hung around. Climbing on the trash and standing on the brick. As we walked up there were several coffins lined up on an embankment, they were a nice touch.
Admission Price: $8 Thursday and Sunday
$10 Friday and Saturday

$1 off if you bring in a can of food for donation
$5 additional if you want to skip the line

* = Since people move through haunted attractions at different rates, your time will vary. Note: The time shown here represents the actual time spent moving forward through the attraction. Time spent waiting in queue lines, staging areas, intro scenes, rules rooms and when traffic jams cause patrons to come to a halt, has been subtracted.

LPR: 1.750
LPR stands for Length/Price Ratio. It represents perceived value of an event, by comparing length vs price of admission. Higher numbers represent more value per dollar. Actual quality and/or entertainment value of an event are not factors in this calculation. Click Here to see how this event compares to others visited this year by the staff of HauntedIllinois.com.
Scare Factor: Medium
Crowd Control: There didn't seem to be any crowd control, there were two younger boys we met up with about halfway through. They were pretty uneasy about going through the haunt, their father, who we met in a room prior to the boys was delayed talking to an actor which quickly ignored him to "greet" us as we entered his scene. Passing that area the father wanted to catch up with the boys... which we obliged.

Walking up and waiting in line to go in we saw no other people, it was a slow night and did not think any other group was in there at the time. The staff at the door asked if we got a chance to read the rules yet. It was a large posted hand written sign. Once we read it we let her know and allowed us to enter.

The haunt seemed to be designed to handle flow control but the night we went it was not utilized.

Summary:

We entered, and walked in a small cozy living room with a horror movie playing on the TV this was a nice touch. The butler seemed annoyed that we were interrupting his sweeping so we continued into the kitchen, from here we were experiencing various haunt elements from a clown banging on a trash can to various people warning us if we continued on and a few that wanted our help. A spiders den, and the fecal eating maniac. The rooms are small but many and highly identifiable.

I especially liked the girl in the bloody marked room mixed with runes and English words. Throwing herself violently against the walls screaming, and the other girl begging for forgiveness because she "didn't do it"

All rooms were fairly detailed with props and wall coverings. somewhat comparable to a pro haunt. I was impressed that most all the actors had either a script or some sort of lines and interacted with us instead of the unprovoked scream. The majority of the actors had makeup on and this haunt did not rely on masks. Their costumes seemed fitting for their role.
