LPR stands for Length/Price Ratio. It represents perceived value of an event, by comparing length vs price of admission. Higher numbers represent more value per dollar. Actual quality and/or entertainment value of an event are not factors in this calculation. Click Here to see how this event compares to others visited this year by the staff of HauntedIllinois.com.
Scare Factor: Medium-High
Crowd Control: Even though the event was not especially busy, we still ran into the group ahead of us. There are also a couple of scenes that are “open” and you are able to see groups in different areas of the haunt than you are in.

Summary:

Raven’s Curse is new to the haunt scene this year. It describes itself as being the “newest and most technologically advanced” attraction in Southern Illinois.

I will start by admitting this…Raven’s Curse has the potential to mature into a worthy haunt. The props used are some of the best I have ever seen. They manipulated the very first scene in a way that I truly loved. The live actors were decked out in great masks, costumes and makeup. All the work, attention to detail and the enthusiasm poured into making this an amazing experience failed to deliver the scares I believe it could with some changes.

From the beginning I felt this haunt was a little too well lit. Several scenes drew my eye upward to the ceiling of the very large Morton building the haunt is held in. Secondly, the “rooms” holding the scenes are very spacious. Almost too spacious. Perhaps the Fire Marshall was extremely strict. Maybe the folks at Pale Night Productions (who put on this haunt) were determined the customers be able to see the high quality of the props. Or maybe they were concerned about everyone’s safety. Whatever the reason, it resulted in a diminished scare for me.

There is a back story for this haunt (a story involving Alexander Hemsworth and his daughter, Annabelle). I like when a haunt has a theme to tie all of the scenes together. I had read the story of Raven’s Curse on their website. My friend didn’t, however, and so he didn’t fully understand how it all tied together. I would urge future haunt goers to take the time to read the story before going. Or for Pale Night Productions to put the story on a board outside of the haunt so those patrons waiting can read it while waiting. How amazing would it have been to read the story, then be escorted into the “house” by Mr. Hemsworth? Live actors have the freedom to not only be scary, but to truly be actors. And with a legend like Raven’s Curse it would behoove the haunt to play off of it and utilize their actors as much as possible.

In addition to the haunted house, Raven’s Curse also has an “Escape the Raven’s Curse” puzzle solving attraction and they also show episodes of Tales from the Crypt for free outside.

Pale Night Productions obviously wants to be a contender in the haunt business and the potential is truly there. It will be fun to see what the future holds for this haunt.
