Hauntedillinois.com - Haunted Illinois visits Salem Massachusetts, home of the infamous Salem Witch Trials of 1692

Samantha Statue @ Lappin Park
Corner of Essex & Washington Street
Salem, Massachusetts

On June 15, 2005, TV Land donated a statue of "Samantha" (from the television series "Bewitched"), to Lappin Park in Salem, Massachusetts.  This bronze likeness of the actress Elizabeth Montgomery is 7 1/2 feet tall, weights 3,000 pounds and cost a grand total of $75,000 to install.  When it was unveiled, 1,500 fans had gathered to watch.  There were, however, a number of protestors on hand who took offense, claiming that it was a disgrace to the 19 people who lost their lives in the witch trials and that it was in poor taste. Some people thought that it helped to perpetuate stereotypes of witches and witchcraft, while others thought it was a tribute to the history of Salem.

The Witch House
310 Essex Street
Salem, Massachusetts
http://www.salemweb.com/witchhouse

The Witch House is the former home of Witch Trials Judge Jonathan Corwin. It is the only remaining standing structure directly connected to the witch trials of 1692.  Tours of the house blend information about seventeenth-century lifestyles, furnishings, and architecture with fascinating insights into the events of 1692.  This building is a classic example of seventeenth-century architecture.
