at Haunted Trails

Frightmare 2004 at
Haunted Trails Amusement Park
7759 South Harlem
Burbank, Illinois 60459

Reviewed: 10/22/04

Visibility/Location: Frightmare 2004 is located in the Haunted Trails Amusement Park along South Harlem Avenue. Their large illuminated sign along the side of the road, as well as the large facade, makes this event easy to find. This attraction is in a great location, with plenty of parking available behind the haunted house.
Wait Entertainment: The only wait entertainment was the spooky music playing outside, for the people waiting in line.
Admission Price: $8.50

Scare Factor: Low-Medium.
Atmosphere: The atmosphere began with a façade outside, painted up in an old west theme, with steer skulls distributed along the posts of the entryway. The mood was further enhanced by the continuation of the old west theme throughout the attraction. In many of the scenes, custom music soundtracks and sound effects were used to add to the mood of the event.
Crowd Control: Crowd control was excellent, as I never ran into another group. The timed scene at the beginning, where the 'Sheriff' read you the rules of the house, allowed the staff to space out groups very well.

I have always been impressed by this attraction's ability to change to a different theme every year. Not a lot of haunted attractions do that, nor do most even stick with a centralized theme. This year Haunted Trails developed an old west theme. Most of their scenes were in line with what you might have seen in the old west and props were appropriate for the scenes they were in. The rooms were created with the help of some nice glowing art on the walls to simulate windows, weathered boards and other scene elements. They were very creative in the way that they modified generic props to fit in with the old west motif. The only thing in the entire attraction that wasn’t consistent with the theme was the actor on the catwalk, who was carrying the severed head of 'Jason' under his arm.

I was, however, a little disheartened to see that there weren’t as many actors as last year and some of those who were there were pretty low-key and non-threatening. Either way, most of the actors knew their roles and stayed in character. Overall, the experience was more fun than scary. Since this attraction isn't overly frightening, it is appropriate for all ages. Along with the haunted house, Haunted Trails Amusement Park also has go-cart tracks, video games and other activities for an entire evening of family fun.
