Raven's Grin Inn Haunted House
411 North Carroll St.
Mount Carroll, IL 61053

Visited: 09/23/06

Visibility/Location: This event is located in the small town of Mt. Carroll, at the end of a dead end street. Signs in the main section of town tell you which way to go. If you follow the directions on their website, you will have no problems finding the Raven's Grin Inn.
Wait Entertainment: The creepy appearance of the old structure, built in 1870, is wait entertainment in and of itself. There is plenty of eye-candy to take in, while you wait outside. The various customized/decorated automobiles, Mr Tuxedo War Memorial and other unique pieces of artwork definitely enhance the atmosphere of the Raven’s Grin.
Admission Price: $10.00

1 Hour and 10 Minutes+ *
= Since people move through haunted attractions at different rates, your time will vary.

Scare Factor: Medium.
Crowd Control: Crowd control in this attraction was excellent. Since it was a semi-guided tour, I never saw or ran into any other groups.

This event is eerie, both inside and out. Upon entering the parking lot, you soon realize that you are surrounded by a wall of trees, which fosters quite a claustrophobic feeling. Inside the Raven’s Grin is just as creepy as the outside. From the stone walls of the underground wine cellar to the coffin-shaped hallway, this event has all the necessary elements to get your blood pumping.

If you’ve never gone to the Raven’s Grin, let me tell you… it is like no other Haunted Attraction out there. You won’t see Freddy, Jason, or Hollywood movie monsters in this place. It’s kind of like a Haunted fun house, with equal portions of fright & comic relief, and definitely a lot of entertainment value. It is filled with some of the most interesting and unique props/artwork you could possibly imagine. Throughout the house you will make your way through various twisting hallways, crawl spaces and slides. In fact, one of the most popular features is the slide in the “Bad Dreams Bedroom”, which shoots you from the top floor of the house down to the stone-walled wine cellar, 24 feet below the surface of the earth! It is a pretty intense experience, so much in fact, that it has been made an optional part of the tour.

Another thing that sets this event apart from other Haunted Attractions is the fact that the place is actually haunted! Customers have reported seeing orbs and other supernatural phenomena while going through on tours. To start off each tour, the owner Jim Warfield gives a brief history of some of the strange things that have been observed inside the house over the years.  That really sets the mood for the adventure that awaits you!

Every time I go to the Raven’s Grin, I see something different. This year Jim has come up with some great new props and displays. I don’t want to ruin the surprise by divulging too much about the new items that I saw this year, but I will say that in one area of the house it was quite an uplifting experience!

If you would enjoy visiting a Haunted Attraction that is truly unique and different from all the rest, this one is definitely a must see! It is so unique, in fact, that it has gained national acclaim. The Raven's Grin has been featured on the television shows like "Wild Chicago", "HGTV Extreme Homes" and Comedy Central’s “Travel Sick”, as well as being featured in many national publications, such as National Geographic World Magazine. It has also been voted one of the Top 13 Haunted Attractions in the country by Hauntworld Magazine. This place has truly made a name for itself over the past 20 years. It is the most unique event I have ever attended. You definitely get a lot of "bang for your buck" (only $10 for over an hour-long tour). The Raven's Grin Inn is an attraction that you definitely don't want to miss.

Note: The best time to visit the Raven's Grin is in the off-season, when you can avoid the huge October crowds and get a more lengthy, in depth and personalized tour. If you visit on non-October dates, you also have the benefit of Jim Warfield, the creative force behind the Raven's Grin, guiding the entire tour. Because The Raven's Grin is open year-round (301 days a year), you can drop in nearly any day for a tour!
