Raven's Grin Inn
411 N. Carroll St.
Mount Carroll, IL 61053

Visited: 09/19/09

Visibility/Location: This attraction is located in the town of Mount Carroll, at the end of a dead-end street.  You should have no problems finding it, if you follow the directions listed on their website.
Wait Entertainment: There really wasn't much for traditional wait entertainment; however, the naturally creepy atmosphere outside was enough to get your blood pumping.  As stated before, this attraction is located at the end of a dead-end street.  The parking lot was also surrounded by trees, which made for a pretty claustrophobic feel, as well as a naturally spooky atmosphere to get you in the mood for the tour.  There were also several interesting displays set up outside to keep you occupied, while you waited for your tour to start.
Admission Price: $12.00
Parking: FREE

1 Hour & 30 Minutes *

Scare Factor: Medium
Crowd Control: Crowd control in this attraction was excellent. Since it was a guided tour, I never saw or ran into any other groups.
Extras: Raven's Grin T-shirts (new design this year!) were available for purchase, as well as a 24 page booklet detailing some of the supernatural happenings at the house, throughout the years.

The Raven's Grin Inn isn't your typical October Halloween Attraction.   When you go, don't expect to see Freddy, Jason, chainsaw-wielding actors or spinning vortex tunnels.  This place is unlike any other.  I would describe it as a haunted funhouse, with some great scares and humor mixed in.

During the tour, patrons encountered slides, a coffin-shaped hallway, twisting underground tunnels and hidden exits.  Throughout the house, there were a lot of interesting displays and creative artwork, all brought to life by the creativity of the owner, Jim Warfield.

One of the most memorable features of the house had to be the slide in the "Bad Dreams Bedroom".  Patrons wrapped themselves in blankets and pads, then slid from the top floor of the house, down to the stone-walled wine cellar, 24 feet below the surface of the earth!  What a wild ride!

On display in the backyard was the twisted remains of Jim's car that was rear-ended by an Abbyville Sausage semi-truck.   Also featured in the outdoor portion of the tour were twisting paths, eerie lighting and Jim's tomb.  Did he really survive the car wreck?  Hmmm...

The Raven's Grin is also different from other Halloween attractions for another reason.  The building is actual haunted! Over the past 22 years, many patrons have reported experiencing supernatural phenomena (seeing ghostly figures, orbs, etc) while going through the house.

This haunted house is a must see!  It is the most unique attraction I have ever visited. It has gained national acclaim, being featured on the television shows like "Wild Chicago", "HGTV Extreme Homes" and Comedy Central’s “Travel Sick”, as well as being featured in many national publications, such as National Geographic World Magazine. It has also been voted one of the Top 13 Haunted Attractions in the country by Hauntworld Magazine.   You definitely get a lot of "bang for your buck" at this event.   With tours lasting over an hour for a modest admission fee of only $12, this is one attraction that you don't want to miss!

Note: The best time to visit the Raven's Grin is in the off-season, when you can avoid the huge October crowds and get a more lengthy, in depth and personalized tour. If you visit on non-October dates, you also have the benefit of Jim Warfield, the creative force behind the Raven's Grin, guiding the entire tour. Because The Raven's Grin is open year-round (301 days a year), you can drop in nearly any day for a tour!
