Scream Scene can be hit or miss. Last year was a bit of a miss, but this year was a hit. As it's populated by high school age (or younger) actors, the scares may not be that high for older people or seasons haunt visitors, but the rooms are varied and creative, and there are enough actors to keep people from being bored. Rooms included a barbershop, a hotel area with guest rooms, front desk, and laundry area, a clown area with a red and white-striped maze, a toxic waste area, and even a spinning tunnel, which was new for this year. The final area consisted of a long corridor with slowly flashing strobe lights where actors darted in and out in front and back of visitors. This was a nice twist and kept visitors guessing as to when and actor would appear.
Scares tend to be mostly of the "jump out and scare you variety", but there were a couple of rooms where the actors were simply creepy and managed to sneak up behind visitors. There was even one scene (new for this year) with a cannibal themed restaurant, consisting of several rooms including the waiting area and the main dining room. While cannibal themes are common, this one was done very tongue-in-cheek, with much humor throughout, putting a nice spin on a tried and tested formula.
Costumes consisted mainly of masks and some limited makeup. Again, as this haunt is populated by younger people elaborate sets or costuming is not the order of the day, but what was on display was definitely good enough. Special mention should be given to one actor who was part of the congregation in a church scene - his costume blended in perfectly with the fake parishioners and made his reveal a complete surprise.
Pricing for Scream scene went up for 2018 (from $10 to $12), but the length of the haunt remains roughly the same. It's not the longest haunt, but its effectiveness depends more on creativity and acting than the duration, and this year some decent acting and creative scenes managed to make Scream Scene quite enjoyable.
For anyone looking for a not-too-scary haunt that will be entertaining for adults and kids alike, Scream Scene is worth a look.
