Scream Scene
4701 Oakton Street
Skokie, IL 60076

Visited: 10/13/18

Reviewed By: Filer
Visibility/Location: The haunt is easy to spot from the road as the name of the haunt is lit up in the form of giant letters on the wall of the parking lot area. There are also banners visible from the street as visitors turn into the parking lot.
Wait Entertainment: On this particular night there was no wait entertainment, but that could have been because the crowds were small and the haunt was closing at 10PM. In the past Scream Scene has had actors working the line and the area close to the parking lot.
Admission Price: $12/Fast Pass $18
Parking: Free
Length:

9.5 Minutes *
* = Since people move through haunted attractions at different rates, your time will vary. Note: The time shown here represents the actual time spent moving forward through the attraction. Time spent waiting in queue lines, staging areas, intro scenes, rules rooms and when traffic jams cause patrons to come to a halt, has been subtracted.

LPR: 2.771
LPR stands for Length/Price Ratio. It represents perceived value of an event, by comparing length vs price of admission. Higher numbers represent more value per dollar. Actual quality and/or entertainment value of an event are not factors in this calculation. Click Here to see how this event compares to others visited this year by the staff of HauntedIllinois.com.
Scare Factor: Medium
Crowd Control: As the crowds were small, crowd control was fine. Usually patron flow is very good, with haunt operators getting a signal from inside the haunt when it is clear to let others through.

Summary:

Scream Scene can be hit or miss. Last year was a bit of a miss, but this year was a hit. As it's populated by high school age (or younger) actors, the scares may not be that high for older people or seasons haunt visitors, but the rooms are varied and creative, and there are enough actors to keep people from being bored. Rooms included a barbershop, a hotel area with guest rooms, front desk, and laundry area, a clown area with a red and white-striped maze, a toxic waste area, and even a spinning tunnel, which was new for this year. The final area consisted of a long corridor with slowly flashing strobe lights where actors darted in and out in front and back of visitors. This was a nice twist and kept visitors guessing as to when and actor would appear.

Scares tend to be mostly of the "jump out and scare you variety", but there were a couple of rooms where the actors were simply creepy and managed to sneak up behind visitors. There was even one scene (new for this year) with a cannibal themed restaurant, consisting of several rooms including the waiting area and the main dining room. While cannibal themes are common, this one was done very tongue-in-cheek, with much humor throughout, putting a nice spin on a tried and tested formula.

Costumes consisted mainly of masks and some limited makeup. Again, as this haunt is populated by younger people elaborate sets or costuming is not the order of the day, but what was on display was definitely good enough. Special mention should be given to one actor who was part of the congregation in a church scene - his costume blended in perfectly with the fake parishioners and made his reveal a complete surprise.

Pricing for Scream scene went up for 2018 (from $10 to $12), but the length of the haunt remains roughly the same. It's not the longest haunt, but its effectiveness depends more on creativity and acting than the duration, and this year some decent acting and creative scenes managed to make Scream Scene quite enjoyable.

For anyone looking for a not-too-scary haunt that will be entertaining for adults and kids alike, Scream Scene is worth a look.
