Summary:
Unfortunately, their outdoor attraction, The Lair, was closed down due to inclement weather on the night that I attended, so this review only covers the Chittyville Haunted School. Being very much actor driven, I would definitely classify it as an "old-school" attraction.
The various scenes in the haunted house had multiple themes, each with a minimal to moderate level of detail. There were, however, some decent special effects, including a mesmerizing green laser projection, a bottomless pit illusion and a pneumatic torso prop that popped up out of a 55 gallon drum.
In a few scenes they used box fans to add an additional sensory element to the experience. At various points, they also had uneven surfaces to walk on like mulch, a rickety bridge and bouncy ramps, to keep customers off balance.
In some areas, there were motion activated floodlights that illuminated static characters behind barriers. Some of the more memorable scenes included a couple of spider hallways, a room filled with stuffed animals, a forest / swamp, a haunted nursery and a clown midway.
The clown scene was one of the most elaborate areas inside the attraction. In this area, customers had to push aside bowling pins hanging from the ceiling, to make their way through. There was also a similar hallway with hanging pool noodles. The clown maze featured red and white plastic strips and was illuminated by a strobe light, to keep you disoriented.
Actor performances were primarily of the pop-out variety and those few with speaking parts stayed in character, even while guiding our group to change direction. Many of the actors were very active, while others, like the group of 3 clowns and actor hiding in the stuffed animal room, were more low-key.
I enjoyed my trek through the Chittyville Haunted School. Although it doesn't have a lot of high-tech special effects, it does have a lot of old-school charm. The actors really made it a fun experience. Check this one out, if you get the chance.
